Saturday’s Projects in Guilford, Norwalk and Stamford Bring Total Vets Served to
266; Monday Ceremonies Will Honor Hamdenites Who Paid Ultimate Sacrifice

Hamden, Conn., May 21, 2025 – House of Heroes Connecticut (HOHCT) will commemorate its 14th
Memorial Day serving those who served this weekend, providing no-cost home repairs for Veterans in need in Guilford, Norwalk and Stamford on Saturday, and then shifting gears on Monday to honor the 103 Hamden residents who paid the ultimate sacrifice in a special ceremony at Haven Beer Company following the Town’s Memorial Day Parade.
The series of events on the most sacred weekend of the year for the loved ones of those who lost their lives in service is only appropriate for the Hamden-based Veterans Service Organization, which served its very first Veteran in Hamden on Memorial Day Weekend in 2012. When Saturday’s projects are complete, HOHCT will have served 266 Veterans or surviving spouses in 71 Connecticut communities and eight additional states.
“Memorial Day has always been very special for House of Heroes,” said HOHCT Executive Director Carol May, whose late husband Bill May, a 24-year Army Aviation Veteran, co-founded the organization in 2012. “This weekend marks where our journey began some 14 years ago, and we haven’t stopped honoring and assisting those who served ever since.
“Bill would be so proud.”
On Saturday:
- In Guilford, HOHCT and a team of some 30 or more volunteers from Project Partners Liberty Bank and Pat Munger Construction Company will assist U.S. Army, Vietnam Veteran and Army Commendation Medal Awardee Daniel Sullivan and his wife Twyla. Sullivan’s life was changed forever in 2009 when he collapsed during a marathon run. Complications following open-heart surgery and an ultimate diagnosis of Primary Progressive Aphasia linked to Agent Orange have left Dan requiring round-the-clock assistance. Work begins at 7 a.m. and will include a variety of window repairs and replacements, exterior siding repairs,
exterior painting and more.
- In Norwalk, HOHCT and a team of about 15 volunteers from the Knights of Columbus Bishop Fenwick
Assembly 100 will assist U.S. Army and Vietnam Veteran Willie Jones. Work begins at 8 a.m. and will include front porch repairs, rear deck repairs including handrail installation, and installation of an interior grab bar.
- In Stamford, HOHCT and a team of about 10 volunteers from Project Partners Greenwich Hospital and
Connecticut Carpenters Union Local 326 will assist U.S. Army and Vietnam Veteran Frank Calzone. Work begins at 8 a.m. and will include extension of a handicap ramp, kitchen window repairs, installation of a grab bar in the master bath and a complete yard clean-up.
Once Saturday’s projects are complete, HOHCT will turn its attention to honoring on Monday those from its hometown of Hamden who have lost their lives in service. House of Heroes Connecticut and Haven Beer Company invite the entire Greater Hamden community to visit the brewery/restaurant for a special ceremony at 1 p.m. on the patio following the Town of Hamden Memorial Day Parade. Local dignitaries, including members of local veterans service organizations will be on hand, a Moment of Silence for the fallen will be observed, and the names of the 103 Hamden residents who lost their lives in service to our nation will be read, with the tolling of a bell for each name.
