The William J. May III Service Above Self Award honors the legacy of House of Heroes Connecticut co-founder Bill May, a man whose life was defined by honor, commitment, and service to others. Before his passing in December 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer, Bill dedicated himself to helping fellow veterans through the House of Heroes mission and worked tirelessly to expand its impact nationwide. He understood that the mission could never be accomplished alone—it would always depend on the support of volunteers, sponsors, craftsmen, and community advocates willing to step forward and serve.

In that spirit, House of Heroes Connecticut proudly recognizes the 2025 Service Above Self Award honorees, individuals and organizations whose generosity, dedication, and hard work help keep Bill’s vision alive and continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans.

Volunteer Honoree: Jesse Timm

Since 2016, Jesse Timm has been one of the many dedicated volunteers who consistently step up when help is needed. A retired installer of rehabilitation equipment such as ramps and stair lifts, Jesse brings valuable hands-on skills and a deep appreciation for those who served our country. His commitment has made him a trusted and reliable presence on countless HOHCT projects. Now, his granddaughter Acelynn, an aspiring carpenter, has begun joining him on job sites—continuing the spirit of service into the next generation.

Together, these honorees embody the values Bill May lived by—selflessness, hard work, and an unwavering dedication to supporting those who served our nation. Their efforts ensure that the mission of House of Heroes Connecticut continues to grow and that Bill’s legacy of service remains strong.

Craftsmen Honorees: Dave Cote & Kevin Cote

Brothers Dave and Kevin Cote have been indispensable members of the House of Heroes Connecticut effort for years. Dave’s friendship with HOHCT co-founder Steve Cavanaugh dates back to middle school in Hamden, making their involvement a natural extension of that long-standing bond. As skilled craftsmen, the Cotes have contributed their expertise on numerous veteran service projects, often working quietly behind the scenes to ensure homes are safer and more comfortable for the veterans who live in them.

Sponsor Honoree: CrossFit Wallingford

CrossFit Wallingford has become a powerful supporter of House of Heroes Connecticut through its annual CrossFit Hero Challenge, a demanding charity workout that honors the sacrifice and service of our nation’s veterans. Inspired by the commitment of HOHCT co-founder Bill May, Sr., gym owner Rob Villano, alongside partner John DelGrego, launched the event in 2019. Since then, the challenge has raised more than $20,000 in support of the organization’s mission, bringing together athletes and community members willing to push their limits for a greater cause.
