“Haven for Heroes” Memorial Day Week at Local Brewery to Include May 26
Ceremonies Honoring Hamden Vets Lost in Service, Plus Holiday Weekend Veteran Discounts and Food/Drink Specials Benefiting the Work of House of Heroes"

Local Hamden residents who lost their lives in service to our nation will be honored this Memorial Day, May 26, in ceremonies at the outdoor beer garden of Haven Beer Company on Dixwell Avenue, part of an ongoing partnership between the popular local brewery and Hamden- based House of Heroes Connecticut to both remind us all of the true meaning of Memorial Day and to raise funds for the important work of House of Heroes.
“I think sometimes too many of us think of Memorial Day as just another holiday, when it is really a
special time dedicated to recognizing those who paid the ultimate sacrifice preserving the freedoms we
all enjoy as Americans,” said House of Heroes Connecticut President and Co-Founder Steve Cavanaugh, a Hamden resident. “The Town of Hamden does a wonderful job with its annual Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies, and this is our way of being part of this special time to recognize service and sacrifice.”
For the second consecutive year, Haven Beer Company will demonstrate its commitment to those who
served with “Haven for Heroes” Memorial Day Weekend. From Monday, May 19 through the Memorial
Day holiday on Monday, May 26, service flags from all U.S. military branches will be on display at the
brewery/restaurant, along with a large banner commemorating all 103 documented Hamden residents
who have lost their lives in service to our nation. The foyer will feature a reverent display of The Missing
Man Table, sometimes referred to as “The Fallen Comrade Table,” meant to remind patrons of fallen,
missing or imprisoned members of the U.S. military.
Beginning Friday evening, May 23, and continuing through the Memorial Day Holiday on Monday, May
26, Haven Beer Company will offer a special Hero Burger and a special-batch Hero Brew, with a portion of food and beer sales benefiting House of Heroes Connecticut, which has provided one-day, no-cost home repairs to more than 260 Connecticut veterans in need – including 29 in Hamden – since 2012. In addition, active-duty members of the military community, as well as military veterans with valid ID, will receive a discount off their tabs. Patrons throughout the weekend will receive a commemorative House of Heroes Connecticut bookmark with their checks, and children will receive a mini-American flag. In addition, specially branded Haven for Heroes merchandise, including a pint glass and t-shirt, will be on sale with a portion of proceeds benefiting House of Heroes.
On Monday, Memorial Day, at 1 p.m., Haven Beer Company and House of Heroes Connecticut invite the entire Greater Hamden community to visit the brewery/restaurant following the Town of Hamden
Memorial Day Parade for a special ceremony. Local dignitaries, including members of local veterans
service organizations will be on hand, a Moment of Silence for the fallen will be observed, and the
names of the 103 Hamden residents who lost their lives in service to our nation will be read, with the
tolling of a bell for each name.
The special week honoring service at the brewery follows last week’s 2nd Annual Haven Beer Company
Charity Golf tournament, which also raised funds for House of Heroes. Haven Beer Company, now in its second year of operations, features a sprawling, stylishly appointed taproom, kitchen, main dining area, outdoor beer garden and private space called “The Penalty Box” for watching sports. The brewery offers guests craft beers brewed in-house, a full bar with craft cocktails, wine and a menu of great food. Haven Beer Company is open Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. – 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. – 12 midnight and Sunday 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.
